Abstract: (der Vortrag wird in deutscher Sprache gehalten, zu Folien in englischer Sprache)

Perhaps the most difficult (and most fundamental) challenge development project teams face is defining accurate, implementable solution requirements for the business problem they are trying to solve. The search for requirements is a struggle for communication, mutual understanding and respect. The discipline of requirements engineering knows many techniques for determining and communicating requirements of which most focus either on the needs of a business expert or that of the developers in charge. In this presentation we show how to combine the needs of both parties to enable and improve communication. We are combining prototyping, mock-ups and formal modeling techniques in one consistent, simple to use approach that is based on Smalltalk as a generic domain-specific language.

We present Exploratory Modeling as an agile modeling process that summarizes the modeling powers of Smalltalk to build high quality, runnable models and achieve customer satisfaction very early in a project. The process is founded in an identification of modeling and programming language and its steps are built on iterative modeling and continuous experimentation. We also show two concrete examples at SAP where we successfully used Exploratory Modeling to get a much better understanding of the application domain and where we were able to nearly eliminate the typical post-go-live application design failures.

Bio Dr. Ralf Ehret:
Ralf is a development architect at SAP. He joined SAP in April 1998 as a developer working with HR and Workforce Management software before moving on to the Business Process Renovation Team. One of his first challenges was to evaluate Smalltalk as a tool for rapid prototyping. Together with consultants from Georg Heeg eK he has successfully completed two Smalltalk projects at SAP. At the end of these two projects he became the main SAP contact during the VisualWorks to SAP integration project.

Bio Andreas Tönne:
Andreas recently joined Cincom Systems as Lead Consultant. Andreas is responsible for the Smalltalk-related service business as well as partner development in the European market. Before that he was vice president of Georg Heeg eK. Andreas coined the name "Exploratory Modeling" and wrote the first articles about this discovery as an answer to the question, why Smalltalk is so successful in projects like at SAP.
